Sometimes you just can’t pass up a good opportunity to give back a little…
For me, it happened several years ago, when the chair of the finance department for NYU asked me to teach a course on investing at the New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies.
“It’ll only last about eight weeks, and cost around $795 a pop,” he said.
Turns out he read my book and decided to reach out to me through a mutual friend.
Now, most of the students were already Wall Street professionals. They were looking to advance their careers or even learn how to better manage their portfolios.
One of the students managed a large hedge fund. She learned all the typical investment theories that are taught at Ivy League colleges. Another worked for the Federal Reserve and needed to understand more on how markets worked. These students were very smart, and the course challenged both them and me.
It was very rewarding experience, too… especially at the end of the course, when I received an email from one of my students (who was an executive at a major investment bank).
I still keep it to this day…
“I have taken a number of finance classes in college and a number of classes at NYU… none of which came close to comparing to yours. In fact, your class is probably the best class I have taken, period.”
I don’t take these words lightly, either. He asked whether I had any plans for teaching a more advanced course, and if so, he wanted to enroll right away.
Unfortunately, I never did teach another course.
Over the years, I continued to receive emails from my students (as well as readers) asking if I intended to make a comeback into the academic world.
Well, I finally have some good news for them — and you!
Student to Master
For those of you who have ever taught a classroom, I’m sure you’d agree with me that it’s a very rich experience. In fact, it might not surprise you to know that my daughter is actually a schoolteacher.
I’m sure you’ll recognize my own “teacher,” although I never personally met him.
Not only did he teach me everything I know about investing today, but he’s also helped me and my readers carve out an incredibly successful trading career.
His name is Ben Graham. He was not only the father of fundamental analysis, but he was also a professor at Columbia Business School. By day, Graham worked on Wall Street managing a limited partnership, but as soon as the stock market closed, he headed uptown to teach his course on investing.
It was during his time teaching that he co-authored Security Analysis, which was instrumental in shaping both my and my readers’ investment approach.
And I know you’ll recognize Graham’s most famous student: Warren Buffett. Buffett actually followed in his footsteps, too, teaching investing at the Municipal University of Omaha between 1952 and 1962.
Every year, Buffett hosts MBA students throughout the world at his office in Omaha, Nebraska. It’s there that he lectures his students on investing and, more importantly, answers their questions on investing… or anything else they can think of asking him.
Truth is, some of the greatest investors in history have spent their time in the classroom teaching students what they know.
Now, it’s my turn… again.

Back to School
Look, my reluctance to teach a follow-up course on investing was mainly due to time.
When I taught at NYU, it would cost me two hours in transportation, as well as about five hours preparing the course material for each class — and this was in addition to my “day job” of researching companies and writing newsletters!
I have a feeling that the teachers among my readers are nodding their heads in agreement right about now.
Now, I’ve run out of excuses.
Given today’s tremendous technological capabilities, there’s no reason not to offer an investment webinar… and I want you to participate at absolutely no cost to you.
So over the last few months, I’ve been relentlessly outlining, writing, and planning a course on value investing.
I want to give you it ALL: the details on different valuation methods, how to create a stock checklist, the problems with forecasting prices… I’ll also show you case studies of actual stocks I picked and why I selected them.
My objective is simple: I want YOU to think like a successful investor and learn how to pick winning stocks that make money.
That’s it.
And it’s exclusive only to my Energy and Capital readers. I’m going to send you the details on this free investment webinar within the next few days… so stay tuned.
All my best,
Charles Mizrahi
